Bergen has been an important trading and maritime city throughout history, and was Norway's largest city until the 19th century. Today, Bergen, with its more than 270,000 inhabitants, is Norway's second largest city. Bergen is also considered Norway's first capital, a title that Oslo accidentally took away from them around 700 years ago. The coffee king and former mayor of Bergen, Herman Friele, has expressed his despair about it on several occasions: “It is only a death, an accident, that means that Bergen is not the capital of Norway today. It is important to remember. I am completely serious”.
