Brooch Sun wheel
Brooch with an interpretation of the historical sun wheel
The sun wheel is one of the oldest historical symbols, originally used by Finno-Ugric peoples in northern Russia. They often had a practical function, such as decorating the belt, but were also used as attachments for knives, scissors, keys, etc., and often in connection with a needle tent/nállugoahti, which is a container for sewing needles.
Juhl's silversmith's historical jewelery tells of the time when the nomads on Finnmarksvidda carried their valuables with them in the form of jewellery. The jewelery was easy to handle, to the delight of the owner, while at the same time being an important trade and barter item. Since Bergen had a trading monopoly in northern Norway, you can find jewelery with roots there, as well as from trade with countries such as Russia, Finland and Sweden. The Historical series is a collection consisting of copies, delicate processing and variations based on these pieces of jewellery.
Juhls Sølvsmie has been based in Kautokeino on Finnmarksvidda since 1959 and was the first workshop for silver jewelery in Finnmark. With a sincere urge to create something beautiful and an irrepressible joy in working, the Juhls family has expressed itself in several forms within crafts and art. Making jewelery has been the most important thing. Every piece of jewelery from Juhls Sølvsmie is made by hand in the workshop in Kautokeino.
