The poet Kristoffer Randers was among those who early caught sight of the spectacular rock formation, in 1890 he wrote: "In the heart of Sunnmøre spreads the wonderful alpine world of high, steep, jagged mountains, which constitute Sunnmøre's greatest attraction and offer the most striking image of its peculiar and magnificent nature. And in the middle of this chaos of eggs and peaks, the Hjørundfjord cuts into the south like a mighty wedge, 36 km long and a couple of kilometers wide.”
