The poet Kristoffer Randers was among those who first noticed the spectacular mountain formation. In 1890 he wrote: “In the heart of Sunnmøre spreads the wonderful alpine world of high, steep, jagged mountains, which constitute Sunnmøre’s greatest attraction and present the most striking picture of its unique and magnificent nature. And in the middle of this chaos of peaks and peaks, the Hjørundfjord cuts into the south like a mighty wedge, 36 km long and a couple of kilometers wide.”
