String Furniture
String is a shelving system designed in 1949 by the Swedish couple Kajsa and Nils Strinning. The starting point was a competition announced by Bonniers Forlag. Bonnier had a thought that people would read more books if they had a place to put them and searched for suitable shelving systems that were easy to transport, assemble and install. Kajsa and Nils Strinning won the competition with their ingenious solution: a flexible, elegant and minimalist shelving system that could be installed on any wall. The design was an immediate success and Nils Strinning later became known as one of the most influential designers in modern, Scandinavian design. The shelves are today a design classic and are still produced in Sweden.
